How to Check Your Engine Oil Level | Step-by-Step Guide

Car engines need oil to keep parts moving smoothly, reduce friction and heat, clean internal components, and prevent wear. Oil prevents metal-on-metal contact and carries away debris.
Without enough oil, an engine can overheat, seize and suffer serious damage that’s expensive to repair.
That’s why we recommend checking your oil every couple of months and before a long journey.
When Should You Check Your Engine Oil?
You should check your oil:
Every couple of months
Before long trips
If a dashboard oil warning light appears
If the engine sounds louder than usual
Regular oil checks help prevent long-term engine damage.
How to Check Your Oil Level (Step-by-Step)
You can check your engine oil yourself in just a few minutes.
Step 1: Park on Level Ground
Park somewhere flat and allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes. This helps ensure an accurate reading.
Step 2: Locate the Dipstick
Lift the bonnet and find the dipstick.
It usually has a brightly coloured handle (often red or yellow).
Step 3: Clean the Dipstick
Using a rag:
Pull the dipstick out
Wipe it clean
Identify the “MIN” and “MAX” markers or notches
Step 4: Check the Oil Level
Insert the dipstick fully back into its tube
Remove it again
Check where the oil sits between the “MIN” and “MAX” markers
The oil level should sit between these markers.
How to Top Up Engine Oil
If the oil level is close to or below “MIN”:
Use the engine oil recommended for your vehicle.
Locate the oil fill cap (usually marked with an oil can symbol).
Using a funnel, add a small amount of oil.
Recheck the dipstick level.
Repeat until the oil sits comfortably between “MIN” and “MAX”.
Important: Do not fill above the “MAX” marker, as overfilling can cause engine damage.
Replace the oil cap securely when finished.
What Happens If You Don’t Have Enough Oil?
Low engine oil can cause:
Increased friction
Overheating
Engine wear
Severe mechanical damage
Ignoring low oil levels can lead to costly repairs.
